DELIVERY DELAYS
NT
5.0 becomes Windows 2000

version of Windows NT "Windows 2000," carrying on a naming
strategy begun when the release date of the successor to
Windows 3.x was repeatedly rescheduled. But it turns out
that Microsoft made the decision before
securing the trademark to the
Windows 2000 name, which belongs to Robert Kerstein, former
CFO of McCaw Cellular Corporation. (CNET, 27 Oct 1998;

Sun
exec battles "phantom NT"
In a lengthy interview, Sun's John McFarlane discusses the
problems inherent in competing against Microsoft's most
persistent vaporware product, Windows NT 5.0. (CNET, 28 Aug

Wait
on NT 5.0
Industry consultants at the Gartner Group express serious
doubt about Microsoft's ability to ship a stable version of
Windows NT 5.0 before the end of 1999, and advised their
clients to wait until 2001. (CNET, 6 Aug 1998)
NT
5.0 delays stall Wintel plans
The delivery date of Windows NT 5.0 slips once again,
raising serious questions about Microsoft's ability to
successfully deliver a highly complex and completely
original operating system product. (CNET, 9 July
1998)
