Dial-A-Ride, a three-year
demonstration project, begins shuttling passengers on July 6,
2000 in Oxnard and Port Hueneme. The bus service will provide
transportation to Channel Islands Harbor, the beaches, Oxnard
Airport, Oxnard's downtown transportation center on Fourth Street,
the transfer area on C Street and limited portions of Port Hueneme.
Dial-A-Ride will serve areas in Oxnard and Port Hueneme that
lack South Coast Area Transit service and will only pick up passengers
in its service area - but - "It will come to your curb,
pick you up and take you to your destination" The service
area runs from Fifth Street down to the ocean, and from the ocean
to Patterson Road, however, the bus will not go into the Navy
bases.
Residents and tourists must call (805) 207-0699 to make reservations
to be picked up by Dial-A-Ride. The hours of operation are from
7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week, except New Year's Day, Memorial
Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The fares are: $1.50 for children and adults; 75 cents for
passengers ages 65 years and older and disabled riders; and free
for children less than 45 inches tall if they are accompanied
by a fare-paying passenger. Those getting senior or handicap
discounts must have proof of age or an Americans with Disabilities
Act card, which is available from SCAT or the Ventura County
Transportation Commission.
