United Way Takes Safari to America's Teaching Zoo

It was a day of animals, games, food and fun as the Ventura County chapter of United Way held its volunteer celebration at America's Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College on Saturday, June 15th, 1996.

The annual event is the organization's way of thanking its volunteers for all of their hard work throughout the year, and this was the first time it was held at the student-run zoo. Nearly 1600 visitors enjoyed the day's activities, including wildlife educational shows put on by the students of the Exotic Animal Training & Management Program, as well as two balloon bounce rooms, a dunk tank, strolling clowns and a variety of game booths. For the ever-famished crowd, "lion burgers" and hot dogs were provided by the Lion's Club of Ventura County, and a Pizza Hut truck served up pizza by the slice.

Debbie Giles, Communications Manager for United Way, said the event was a huge success. "We could not have picked a better place for our volunteer celebration. Both United Way of Ventura County and the Teaching Zoo benefited. We had built-in entertainment and a wonderful backdrop for our celebration, and they got greater exposure in our county."

United Way guests were also invited to tour the grounds, as students of the animal program gave interpretive talks and answered questions about the more than 150 exotic and domestic animals that reside at the zoo.

Ventura Zoological Society Supports EATM Program

The world's wildlife is in trouble. Species are vanishing at an alarming rate. The Exotic Animal Training and Management (EATM) program at Moorpark College is working to save wildlife and you can help with this effort through your involvement in the Ventura Zoological Society.

At America's Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College, students learn how to care for endangered species in captivity and how to educate others about the need for conservation. The zoo's educational presentations use live animals to teach appreciation and understanding of wildlife to school children and the general public.

The Ventura Zoological Society supports the EATM program by helping pay for the cost of maintaining the animal collection, funding new construction, and by organizing special lectures and events to further educate the students and the public.

You can become involved in the work of the EATM program by joining the Ventura Zoological Society. Your membership fee will give you

We all share the responsibility of preserving our planet's wildlife. The greatest benefit you will enjoy by joining the society is the knowledge that you are helping to make a difference for the future of life. Please join today.
