The Stranger and the Box

By Craig Gavel

I suddenly awoke to a loud crash. To my horror there was a stranger standing just outside my window. I screamed so loud that my sister sleeping in her bed just across the room jumped right out of bed. she looked around and after seeing nothing she came over to me, "what's wrong Craig why are you screaming?" she asked in a tone of genuine concern. "There's a man looking in our window." I said as I pointed to the window behind her. She turned around looked but said she saw nothing. I looked at the window and there I saw a man wearing a trench coat and a fedora. He was tall and slender, he looked like something out of a Dick Tracy story. "Someone's out there missy" "There's no one out there it's just your imagination now go back to sleep everything's all right." Yet I couldn't go back to sleep I was afraid this stranger would come back. Seeing how scarred I was my sister climbed into bed with me, "Feel safer now?" she asked. Before I could reply I was sound asleep.

I awoke the next morning, still half a sleep I called out "Mom, Mommy" as I walked out of my room. " I'm in the bathroom" she yelled back. so I walked to the bathroom and saw her blow drying her hair. I said good morning and proceeded to walk into my parents bedroom. The room itself was small, room enough for a dark oak wood dresser and a queen size bed that barely fit. to my left there was a small closet, and to the right was a window. I sat down at the edge of the bed. My dog Dusty came running over to me, his coat was a dusty brown hence, forth that's how he got his name. Dusty is half collie and half German shepherd. I sat there for a few minutes petting Dusty. The closet door started to shake, Dusty started to bark at the door. I sat there looking at the door it started to shake violently as if their was something locked inside that wanted out. Still unable to move I screamed out "Mom, mom the closet doors shaking!" "It's probably our land lord open it up for him." At the time that statement sounded a bit odd, but I did as she said and tried to open the door it was hard to get a handle on the door knob because the door was shaking so violently but when I did I noticed it was locked.

My mom soon entered the room as she did the door stopped shaking and opened easily. The only thing in there besides cloths was a wooden box that was purple in color but also had little white dots that looked sort of like stars. "What were you screaming about?" Mom asked. "The, the door was sshh-sh-sh -aking" I stuttered. "Is it shaking now?" " no" I answered." Perhaps it was just your imagination." I just nodded though at the time I doubted it and I still doubt it. Later that afternoon my mom was hanging out the clothes and I was playing with my toy trucks in the back yard. The cops walked into our yard along with our next door neighbor. They walked up to my mom and started talking to her. I couldn't hear what they were saying so I ran over towards my mom. "Mrs. Calloway was robbed, late last night while she was at work, did you happen to see or hear anything last night?" asked the officer. "No we all went to sleep relatively early last night. "Did you hear any loud noises or anything?" asked the officer. "No, but if we did we would of called the police." Mom continued to speak but I don't really remember much of the conversation. I tried to tell the police about the stranger with the rain coat and fedora hat, the officer made like he was jotting down everything I said but I highly doubt it. As I told the officer about the stranger, I saw that our neighbor was a bit puzzled or concerned.

A couple of days later we were moving into a new house. Well the house itself wasn't so new, hell it was built sometime in the early nineteen hundreds, but it was new for us. I awoke one morning, and cleared the sleepies from my eyes. I got out of bed and started to walk to the living room. "Craig, Crrrraaaiiiggg!!!!" Said the voice in a spooky tone. I turned and looked towards my closet. Now the room itself was really dark, with black paneling on the walls and a navy blue rug. The closet was also very dark, dark paneling lined the walls and the door itself was dark. I looked at the closet and I saw two yellow eyes, "It is OK Craig I won't hurt you." came the voice from the closet. "Help, help mommy, mommy!!" I screamed. "No don't scream don't call for you mom I won't hurt you." The voice said in a soft tone. I took off running into the kitchen and than the living room. "Mommy, mommy, mommy there's something or someone in my room mommy!!" I said as I ran towards her to my surprise she was in a trance like state not moving or answering me. I waved my hands infront of her eyes she didn't blink. What was more unusual is the fact that my dog Dusty who's never allowed on the couch and who never laid down on the couch was indeed laying down on the couch. I started to pet Dusty and than he jumped down off of the couch, and started to lick my hand and face. My mom turned to me and said " I didn't know you were up how long have you been here?" I knew not what to say and so I said nothing. Hours later when I got brave enough to enter my room. I looked in the closet and found that strange box that was purple with white dots that looked like stars.

A couple of days later the box was thrown away. Before that box had been thrown away I had, had a few weird experiences that I don't really remember to well I know they had to do with moans and shrieks. but after the box was gone all strange experiences in my life were gone.
