My True Ghost Story

By Allan Mills

My Aunt moved into a small farm house just North of Sault Saint Marie, Ontario. I was sent there for summer vaction and to help them settle in to their new home. My first night with them had my Uncle working nights, leaving my Aunt and I alone in the house. After a very quiet evening in the house unpacking boxes and moving furniture around, my Aunt went to bed while I watched TV downstairs. I had never given any thoughts to ghosts so I wasn't expecting the noises from outside the window that the couch backed onto. The noises started as scratching sounds and then started to bang or tap lightly. I thought that it was tree branches at first and ignored it. I was tired so I headed off to my room on the second floor across from my Aunt's room. At around 12:30 I was awakened to a loud crashing sound from downstairs. I got and went out into the hall. My Aunt was there too and asked me if I had heard the sound. I agreed and we went downstairs together, thinking that something had fallen over or that my Uncle had returned early from work and had bumped into something. The stairs in the house led into the living room and were located near the front door. Nothing was disturbed there so we moved onto the kitchen. As soon as my Aunt turned on the kitchen lights we were both shocked to see all the cupboard doors and all the drawers open in the room. The silverware was scattered about the kitchen floor, although the cupboard contents were undisturbed. After cleaning up and closing all the cupboards and drawers we went back to bed and chocked it up to the idea that maybe we had forgotten to close up everthing and the silverware had fallen or had been knocked over by their cat. After we had gone back to bed, I was again awakened at around 3:00 AM to the same kind of noise. My Aunt and I met in the hall again and went down the stairs once more. When we got to the kitchen and turned on the light all the cupboards and drawers were again open. In addition to this though, all the chairs and the table were turned over and lay near the back door entrance. Needless to say, we were both scared, and my Aunt called my Uncle at work. He came home and checked the area and the house completely. We didn't sleep the rest of the night, either. During the day there was never any problem at the house. On my second night there I was alone watching TV while my Aunt and Uncle went out for groceries. I went into the kitchen to get a drink and nearly keeled over when I saw a face looking in through the back door at me. I should say that this door was not used and was nailed shut. I turned on the back light, but there was no one there. I sat in the living room with all the lights on until they returned. That night while my Uncle was at work, we again heard the banging noises downstairs, although by this time there was no way I was going down there to check it out. My Aunt came into my room and tried to get me to go with her. I went as far as the living room and nearly wet myself when I heard her scream. She ran out of the kitchen and told me that the cupborads and drawers were again open, but this time she heard a noise at the back door and when she looked at it she saw a face peering in at her. We left the room as we found it and sat in the living room. We eventually fell asleep there and when we woke up in the morning all the empty furniture in the living room was moved in front of the stairs. I was sent home by my Aunt and Uncle early and heard from them that the events continued for weeks after I had left. Eventually my Aunt couldn't stand it there anymore and they moved. In addition to the banging and furniture moving and the occasional face seen in the back door window, my Aunts scariest night was when she woke up and felt something tugging on her covers. When she reached over and turned on the lamp the face that we had seen in the window was now attached to a body that was standing beside her bed. My Aunt described the person as an old lady that was short and heavyset. When my Aunt spoke to her the lady vanished right in front of her. The next day my Aunt and Uncle moved. That's it, believe it or not. I know that ever since, I have a definite belief in ghosts. I heard from my Uncle a few weeks later that he visited some of the neighbours and asked about the house. He was told that a very old couple had owned the house since its completion and had died within a few months of each other. The house had sat empty for nearly a year before my Aunt and Uncle moved in. Another couple eventually bought the house and they too moved out within a few months with no explanation given. The house was eventually torn down and some kind of strip mall put up in its place.
