The Environmental Compliance Division is responsible for several important regulatory-based programs in the City of Simi Valley. There are three main components to the Environmental Compliance Division,
the Industrial Pretreatment, Stormwater Management, and Hazardous Materials programs. INDUSTRIAL PRETREATMENT The City's Industrial Pretreatment Program is mandated through the Federal National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Program (NPDES). The Industrial
Pretreatment Program, monitors commercial and industrial waste discharges into the sewer system. This program is designed to prevent toxic and hazardous material from entering the sanitary sewer system and Water
Quality Treatment Facility. The City employs Environmental Compliance Inspectors who work with local businesses to ensure toxic and hazardous materials are not released into the sewer system.
STORMWATER MANAGEMENT
The Stormwater Management
Program is mandated under the Clean Water Act and implemented by the Environmental Compliance Division with support from other City Divisions, within and outside of the Department of Public
Works. The Stormwater Management Program includes programs for administration, construction, planning and land development, public outreach, business outreach, illicit discharge control, and
public infrastructure. An integral part of the Stormwater Program is education and training of the City's employees, industry personnel, the general public, and other affected groups. The
Environmental Compliance Division coordinates the City's efforts towards compliance with the Countywide Program, Federal urban runoff regulations, and the State and Regional Water Quality
Control Board permit requirements.
Environmental Compliance staff also coordinates the annual Coastal Cleanup Day
held each September and works with the Neighborhood Councils to implement inland waterways cleanups during the spring. These events help remove
thousands of pounds of trash from the local creeks before it percolates into the groundwater or are carried downstream to the ocean during the rainy season.
