Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Program

Hazardous Waste

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Program

WHAT IS THE HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DROP-OFF PROGRAM?

Simi Valley residents may use the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Program, which allows residents to safely and conveniently dispose of their Household Hazardous Waste (HHW).  Most products deemed ``universal waste" by the California Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC) can be disposed of at the HHW Collection Event.  Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off events are held on the third Saturday of each month (except December).  Materials are accepted by appointment only.

HOW DO I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?

Appointments can be made by calling the City of Simi Valley, Department of Public Works 24-hour appointment information line at (805) 583-6321.  Appointments will be made at 15-minute intervals between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. on the third Saturday of every month (except December).  Appointments for the next month's event are taken beginning the Monday following the Saturday event.

2007 Calendar of Free Collection Events

January 20               May 19               September 15
February 17             June 16               October 20
  March 17                 July 21                 November 17
April 21                   August 18            December - No Event

WHO CAN USE THE HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DROP-OFF PROGRAM?

The Program is open to residents of the City of Simi Valley.  Residents of other Ventura County cities should call their city's HHW coordinator for information on their local HHW Program, and residents within the County's unincorporated areas should contact the County of Ventura at (805) 658-4323.

WHY IS THIS PROGRAM NECESSARY?

Some products deemed ``universal waste" by DTSC have low levels of hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium, which cannot be disposed of in the trash and subsequently deposited into the landfill.   Improper disposal of HHW materials can lead to increased risk to public health and safety and increased liability and environmental cleanup costs.  This Program provides residents a free, safe, and convenient way to properly dispose of their HHW.

Smoke alarms are not accepted.  It is recommended you return used smoke alarms to the supplier.  The supplier address is usually listed in the product warranty or user's manual.

It is ILLEGAL to dispose of Hazardous Waste in curbside trash collection bins.

ARE THERE LIMITS ON THE AMOUNT OF HHW I CAN BRING?

Yes.  You may bring up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of material per appointment.  Please be sure to use safe means of transportation and keep in mind California State law prohibits transporting these HHW materials in containers larger than five gallons.

HOW DO I SAFELY TRANSPORT THE HHW?

To safely transport your HHW to the Drop-Off Program, it is best to have liquid material in the sealed, original container.   If the possibility of leaking exists, place the container in a larger container surrounded by absorbent material, such as kitty litter.  Put the containers and other HHW materials in your car trunk or truck bed and secure them so they will not tip over.  Do not mix materials.  Containers for collecting used oil will be returned if requested.  Other containers cannot be returned to you

If you have any further questions on the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Program, please contact the City of Simi Valley, Department of Public Works, at (805) 583-6429.
