The Sanitation Services Division operates the City's sewer collection system and sewage
treatment plant. It is a twenty four hours a day, seven days a week operation, requiring constant monitoring and skilled operators to achieve proper water cleanliness and provide
the community with a reliable sanitary system. The City's Water Quality Treatment Facility treats all the wastewater in Simi Valley, using state-of-the-art processes and process
controls that result in producing water that meets stringent water quality standards.
The City treats nearly 10 million gallons of wastewater every day. The Treatment Facility
is rated to accept 12.5 million gallons per day, which will accommodate planned City growth. Due to ever more challenging water quality standards and
improving technology, the wastewater treatment industry is constantly changing. In 2005, the City completed a major process addition to the Treatment Facility adding nitrification-denitrification process
components, while upgrading and updating many associated facility components as well. The $14 million invested in this improvement was used to meet new regulatory requirements. The Sanitation Division is an enterprise-funded activity. It relies upon user fees (not tax funds) to pay for the approximate
$12 million annual expense. The customers are served with reliable and environmentally advanced services for a cost less than the regional median cost for such services.
